How to Play the Block-Stacking Game

The goal is to arrange falling blocks, called tetrominoes, into complete horizontal lines. When a line is fully filled from left to right with no gaps, it clears and you score points. The more lines you clear at once, the more points you earn.

Seven different tetromino shapes fall one at a time from the top of the grid. Use the arrow keys to move each piece left and right, and the Up arrow or Spacebar to rotate it before it lands. The Down arrow speeds up the fall if you want to place a piece quickly.

The game ends when the blocks stack up to the top of the grid and a new piece cannot enter. The longer you survive and the more lines you clear, the higher your score.

How Scoring and Levelling Works

  • Clear 1 line: scores points based on your current level
  • Clear 2 lines at once: scores more than two single clears combined
  • Clear 3 lines at once: significantly higher score multiplier
  • Clear 4 lines at once: known as a Tetris, achievable only with the long I-piece and the highest single-move score in the game
  • Level up: every 10 lines cleared increases your level by 1, making pieces fall faster and requiring quicker reactions

Tips for Beginners

  • 1Keep the stack low: the lower your blocks, the more time you have to react to new pieces
  • 2Build flat: aim to keep your stack as level as possible to avoid awkward gaps
  • 3Save the I-piece: the long straight piece is the only shape that can clear four lines at once. Leave a single-column gap on one side for it.
  • 4Think ahead: the next piece is shown on screen. Start planning where to place it before the current piece lands.
  • 5Use soft drop sparingly: speeding up with the Down arrow is useful but gives you less time to think.
